Our History
The history of Sharon Missionary Baptist Church began in 1890 in the small town of Stoneville North Carolina, located 30 miles north of Greensboro and minutes from the Virginia State line.
A Baptist minister, known as Reverend Thurmond, from Martinsville Virginia devoted his time to ministering to this congregation of believers. Attendance grew rapidly as word of his preaching circulated in the community.
Reverend Peter Foye from Winston-Salem North Carolina accepted the call to lead this ministry and the congregation moved their Worship Service to a school building on the west side of Stoneville. In 1908 the church was officially named Sharon Baptist Church and joined the High Point Educational & Missionary Baptist Association. Today, the church is honored to be one of the oldest Churches in this Association.
In it’s 119-year history SBC has been blessed with 12 Pastors. Rev. Peter Foye, Rev. Sandy Gilmer, Rev. Robbins, Rev. W.M. Neal, Rev. Abe Fulp, Rev. Buie, Rev. Hairston, Rev. W.P. Clark, and Rev. J. W. Robinson. Rev. Jacob Dillard was installed as Pastor in 1963 and served faithfully for 32 years. Under his leadership, the church was rebuilt in 1971 and the cornerstone bears his name. In 1996 Dr. Jacob Dillard retired, and Rev. Reginald B. Kellam was installed as Pastor.
Through the years it has been God’s blessings and the dedicated work of sincere Christian leaders in the church that has preserved its existence. Honor is given to the legacy of leaders such as Dr. Jacob Dillard, who served as Pastor for 32 years and was instrumental in the rebuilding of the church in 1971; Deacon John Edd Spencer, who has served as Chairman of the Deacons for 42 years and still holds that position; Sister Nancy W. Perry, who served as Church Treasurer Secretary for 36 years; and Mother Mamie Smith, who served as Church Clerk for 38 years. It is this dedication and devotion to God from these believers, and others not mentioned by name, that has contributed to the 119-year legacy of Sharon Missionary Baptist Church.
In 2004, Minister Kenneth N. Moore answered the call to Pastor Sharon Baptist Church. He was installed as Pastor in January 2005. Under his leadership, a major church renovation project that began in 2007 was completed with a ribbon cutting ceremony on May 15, 2008 in which the church membership dedicated the structure back to God.
With a membership of approximately 275 and growing rapidly, the church has implemented programs designed to promote the spiritual growth of the members. There are 31 ministries within the church structured to meet the needs of the various age groups.
The SBC Community Development Outreach Center, located on Deaton Loop Road just south of the church, was founded in 1999 and is a popular place for community and family activities that support the church’s commitment to serve as a positive image in the community and to re-establish family values.
